Guizhou’s Hollow Monument

Guizhou Dushan County’s Shui Si Lou 水司楼 is an architectural wonder almost 100m in height and 240m deep. Construction began in earnest after 2016 (coinciding with the implementation of policies preventing capital outflow) and the surrounding area was slated to be a massive mixed development comprising residential properties, shopping malls and resorts. However, developers overbuilt, overborrowed and overstretched themselves. Reality soon set in. The glut of properties and lack of buyers saw the withdrawal of investors which led to the abandonment of the project.

The building cost was estimated to be about 256 million yuan as China’s property market hit record highs after capital control measures were in place. With no buyers and the exit of investors, the project had stalled since 2020.
