The secret location, codenamed Ma Lan, is now a new geographical location with a museum showcasing the development of China’s nuclear capabilities. What is concealed, however, are the hundreds who had died of cancer or suffered from chronic illnesses like Gao Feng’s compatriots. Gao himself had not had a good night’s sleep for 30 years. When Gao tried to get their stories out to seek compensation from the government, he was threatened and silenced.
Does this happen in another country? Sure, but in a free country, the victims have a voice and their rights. That makes a world of difference, as much as that between a civilised and uncivilised society.
